The National Institutes of Health

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is the primary federal entity for financing medical research. The NIH was founded in 1887, and has grown today to encompass 27 separate institutes and centers. The NIH is one of eight agencies of the Public Health Service, which is itself part of the Department of Health and Human Services.
